Therapy for Professional Stress and Burnout

“Burnout is a bone-tired, soul-tired, heart-tired kind of exhaustion.” – J. W. Pennebaker

Professional life can be a major source of pride and fulfillment, just as it can be  distressing and overwhelming. Corporations and workplace settings can feel dehumanizing, easily evoking pain related to early experiences around self-worth and belonging. It is common in our fast-paced, do-more-with-less systems to struggle with setting boundaries with work and making time for self-care.

I am passionate about supporting exhausted professionals by providing perspective and practical strategies to offer clarity and reduce stress and overwhelm.

Together, we will process and uncover resources to address:

  • Burnout
  • Compassion/caregiver fatigue
  • Exploration of values and passion
  • Strengthening workplace boundaries
  • Whether to stay or leave a job
  • Career change
  • Creative blockages

Common signs of burnout include:

  • Feeling tired and drained most of the time
  • You dread going to work more often than not
  • Increased headaches, stomach aches or muscle pain
  • The hard days at work far outweigh the good/easy days
  • A sense of failure and self-doubt
  • Decreased satisfaction and sense of accomplishment
  • Use of food, alcohol or drugs in excess to cope
  • Increased isolation and social withdrawal
  • Your family and/or those close to you have noticed a difference in your mood and behaviors

Risk Factors for Burnout

  • Feeling like you have little or no control over your work.
  • Working in a demanding, high-empathy, typically understaffed field (such as medicine/nursing, counseling, or teaching)
  • Lack of supportive/effective leadership.
  • Lack of recognition or reward for good work.
  • Unclear or overly demanding job expectations.
  • Doing work that’s monotonous or unchallenging.
  • Working in a chaotic or high-pressure environment.
  • Working too much, without enough time for socializing or relaxing.
  • Lack of close, supportive relationships.
  • Taking on too many responsibilities, without enough help from others.
  • Not getting enough sleep.
  • Perfectionistic tendencies; nothing is ever good enough.
  • Pessimistic view of yourself and the world.
  • The need to be in control; reluctance to delegate to others.
  • High-achieving, Type A personality.
